Anyone that has lived on catchment without any treatment of the water will know the hardship and expense of hauling water for cooking and drinking, not much fun at all. You can safely drink and bathe in catchement or well water by adding one or more of the available methods for treating the water to render it potable.
The lowest cost and most efficient methods of treating water is with a combination of charcoal filtering and UV treatment. All manufacturers of UV systems recommend a dual filter set up, where one has a sediment filter ( 10-30 microns ) in the first housing and a carbon block filter ( 5 or 10 microns ) in the second housing, followed by the UV treatment chamber itself.
Waterworks Hilo and Waterworks Kona is proud to be one of the pioneers in this field and the company that originally introduced UV to Hawaii. We have installed thousands of these systems here in Hawaii and elsewhere. The economical up front cost coupled with the low electrical consumption of the system, for example; a 12 GPM system uses the same electricity as a 40 Watt light-bulb, makes this ideal for household applications. For commercial applications we do have access to larger commercial and municipal treatment systems as well.
The running and maintenance costs are very low, as the only replacement part is the bulb itself, they have a year worth of usable life and thus needs to be replaced annually. The cost for the bulb will be between 50-80 dollars depending on model and size.
Installation is straightforward and not very costly, and can be accomplished in a matter of a few hours.
We stock UV units from 1 GPM to 24 GPM both in our Kona and Hilo showrooms and we would be delighted to answer any questions in this regard.
Get a UV and stop hauling water for your household!

Waterworks Hilo & Waterworks Kona were proud to be a part of the 2012 KCFA conference in Kailua-Kona! Many coffee farmers are finding it difficult to get through the dry season (or the draught in the wet season) without additional water storage. Waterworks can provide systems to fit every need and budget, and the portable potable watertanks, rain saucers and rain barrels were a real attention grabber at the conference!

As with everything in life… you get out of your tank what you put into it!
One of the key ways to help improve the taste and odor of your catchment water, as well as improve the life of your filters, is to ensure that the water going into your tank is as clean as possible before it gets there. The most efficient way to do so is with what is called a “First Flush Diverter”.
Simply put, this device allows the initial rain water that washes all the dirt and dust of your roof to go into a seperate pipe, this pipe has a ball in it that floats up as it is filled with water. When full, the ball blocks the pipe and water is diverted into tank. It is set up to empty itself inbetween rains for minimum maintenance. The product we carry here at Waterworks is manufactured by our Australian partners; “Rain Harvesting Corporation”. We have the full complement of their product line from Leaf Eaters to First Flush Diverters. You can see the systems in either our Waterworks Hilo or Kona showrooms.
The system can be installed on all the downspouts connected to your tank in a day.
Clean water makes for happy families!

As 2011 draws to an end, we here at Waterworks Hilo and Waterworks Kona want to extend our deepest mahalo to all of you in our local communities. Competition with the “Big Box Stores” is challenging for small, locally owned businesses like ours and we know that it takes the support of you to keep us going!
In 2012 we will continue to push for safer, cleaner drinking water for all of our Big Island residents. We hope to increase the number of households with UV (ultra violet) filtration systems, as well as other clean water improvements with the following product lines:
- UV Filtration – proven to be an effective, safe, and affordable way to santize catchment water
- First Flush Diverters – significantly reduce contaminents that enter through roof & gutters
- Leaf Eaters – effectively reducing large debris, such as Ohia leaves, from entering downspouts
- Floating Intakes – extending the life of your filters by reducing the intake of dirt and sediment into your filter & pump system
Again, Mahalo, Thank You, and Tanks Alot for a great year and we look forward to serving your water needs in 2012 and beyond!

A few years back we had a meeting with Trisha Macomber from the UH regarding the benefits of a floating intake in your catchment tank, they are many. Your water will taste better and have less odor. You’re getting the water from the top few inches of your tank as opposed to from the bottom of your storage tank where all the dirt and debris end up. You will also save money on filters, as the life is extended with the cleaner water going to your pump and passing through your filtration system.
For about the last 2 years the technicians at Waterworks have been busy perfecting and manufacturing our floating intakes for catchment tanks. We make them right here, locally at Waterworks Hilo. They currently retail for $95.00. Stop in today for a demonstration!
